Josephine MacDonald

4/13/2017

Josephine MacDonald (nee Miranda), age 92 of Wayne, passed away on April 13, 2017.

She was born to Joseph and Agnes Miranda at the family home located at 113 Beech Street in Paterson along with her twin sister. Not having selected baby names, their parents named the girls after the doctor who delivered them, Joseph, and his wife, Doris. The family, including Josephine’s eight siblings, moved to Preakness Avenue in Wayne when she was in the fourth grade. As there was no high school in Wayne at that time, she graduated from Pompton Lakes High School with the Class of 1943.

In her teens, Josephine met Warren MacDonald, who lived in town on a family farm on Valley Road. The two dated and enjoyed weekend social gatherings at the Grange Hall on Hamburg Turnpike. Ironically, he too was named after the doctor who delivered him. The romance between them was put on hold when Mac enlisted in the Merchant Marine in December 1943. Upon his return from the service on February 21, 1947, they immediately wanted to marry. They were urged by family and friends to wait and rekindle their relationship. Ignoring their concerns, they eloped eight days later on March 1. They drove to Maryland, got married, and returned home on the same day. Only one person, Mac’s sister Elva, was told of their secret until the announcement was finally made six months later.

The couple enjoyed a busy life. In addition to raising three children, Mac was an active member of the Salaam Temple Shriners and the Royal Order of Jesters, which kept them both on the go. They constantly attended events and formal dinners and also had the opportunity to travel frequently with their closest friends. Warren and Jo were married for 47 years at the time of his passing in February 1995.

For many years following Mac’s passing, Josephine happily spent her time with her daughter Lori caring for her children Alex, Jake, and Erin. She was glad to be needed and pleased to help with the children and household tasks. In turn, Lori’s family cared for Josephine in her later years, allowing her to fulfill her wish of remaining in her home.

Josephine is survived by her daughter Lori Scheidemann and her husband James of Wayne; her daughter-in-law Kathie MacDonald of Wayne; and her grandchildren: Alex, Jake, and Erin Scheidemann, Warren MacDonald III and his wife Daniela Maldonado, Heather MacDonald and her fiancé Phil O’Donnell, and Ashley MacDonald and her fiancé Jack Minder. She was predeceased by her husband Warren D. MacDonald, Sr. (1995) and her sons Warren D. MacDonald, Jr. (2010) and Kenneth A. MacDonald (1985). Her late siblings include Doris Hennings, Alice Martell, Marie Shuttleworth, Ralph Miranda, Oliver Soller, Anna Smith, Walter Miranda, and William Jansen.

Friends may visit with the family at the Vander May Wayne Colonial Funeral Home, 567 Ratzer Road, Wayne, on Monday, April 17, 2017 from 4-8 PM.

Funeral Services will be held at 12:30 PM on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at the funeral home, then to the Preakness Reformed Church Cemetery, Wayne, where Josephine will be laid to rest with her husband and sons.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Josephine’s name may be made to the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Dr., Tampa, FL 33607, www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org, or Hospice of New Jersey, 400 Broad Acres Dr., Bloomfield, NJ 07003.
