Frank "Rex" Ricciardi

Frank B. Ricciardi “Rex” age 84, of Wayne, passed away on Monday, April 17, 2017.

Enjoying the distinction of having been born on New Year’s Day at home on 14 Graham Avenue in Paterson to James and Josephine Ricciardi, Rex grew up in Paterson and graduated from Eastside High School with the Class of 1951.

In 1953, Rex’s family said goodbye to him and his brother Marco as the two of them were drafted into the U.S. Army. Meanwhile, because the Army would never call all the sons from one family into service at the same time, his brother James remained home. During the Korean War, Rex was stationed in Japan while Brother Marco was sent to Korea. As good fortune would have it though, they were miraculously able to connect with each other while defending our freedoms so far from home. Rex served overseas until 1955 when the war ended but he remained a reservist for another six years.

As a young boy, Rex could best be described as a bit mischievous. This nature occasionally resulted in a call to his parents from the Paterson Police. Ironically, after returning from the war, Rex joined that very same police department and when they recognized his somewhat familiar face, Rex’s explanation was “Hey! If you can’t beat em’, you may as well join em’.”

Rex was very proud of his Italian heritage. One of his favorite memories growing up was Sunday dinner at home. His mom was a great cook and each Sunday, she made many delicious Italian favorites – so many that everyone’s plate had to hang half off the table just so that all the serving dishes could fit.

Rex himself was always a good provider. His kids recall what a big Mets, Yankees, and Ranger fan he was and, occasionally, he would take them to New York to catch a game. In more recent years, he enjoyed watching old western movies on television.

Rex is survived by his two sons and two daughters: Michael and wife Helen Petruska of Wayne, Lori and husband Jack Ellicott of Toms River, Frank Ricciardi, Jr. of Wayne, and Niki and husband Tom Lanza of Wayne; eight grandchildren: Michael, Eric and Jared Petruska, Ryan and Adam Ellicott, and Danielle and Alex Lanza; two great-granddaughters: Madelyn and Olivia Petruska; one great grandson: Aiden Ellicott; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his two brothers: Marco and James Ricciardi.

A Graveside Service will take place on Thursday, April 20, 2017, beginning 9:30 AM at Calvary Cemetery, 50 McLean Blvd. Paterson. Please meet directly at the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy in Frank’s name are asked to consider the Wayne Township Memorial First Aid Squad, P.O. Box 2004, Wayne, NJ 07474.

My sincere sympathy on your loved ones passing. I worked with Rex on PPD. We were also neighbors at Park East Terrace. We would talk about the "ole" times in Paterson and those we worked with. My prayers to all of you. May he rest in peace. Dolores Most

Please accept my deepest sympathies on your loss. I served with Rex on the PPD and he was a "solid guy"...fearless and one who could be depended upon when you needed back-up. A big loss! Sincerely, Jim Buckley
