Petronella Lim

12/6/2017

Petronella Lim (van Nunen) age 97, of Wayne, passed Wednesday, December 6, 2017. She was born in Eindhoven, Netherlands and was the youngest in her family. She was affectionately known as Petje (Pete-cha) by her family.

She lived through World War II and during that time she smuggled tobacco from Belgium into Holland and used the money to buy food. Those who know Petronella will remember her as a “survivor.” She always did what she had to do to survive.

Her first husband Martinus van den Oever passed at the age of 36 in 1954 along with her mother, she was truly devastated. Several years later she met Edward Lim at a social club in Holland. They married in 1956. They originally came to the United States that same year. A year and a half later, she became homesick and they returned to Holland. They did return back to live permanently in the United States in 1960.

They were originally sponsored to immigrate into California. By mistake, they ended up in New Jersey and settled there having lived in Newark, Toms River, Bloomfield and Nutley. After her husband’s death she moved in with her son in Wayne. She was a strong willed person, fighter, and would often say “getting old is not for sissys.” She lived to an old age despite eating just about anything including: salt, sugar, fresh veggies, and just about any fattening foods you could think of. As she put it, “lekker eten” (good food). Her family rarely went on a “vacation” as she did without in order to save money. They did however take day trips which provided many fond memories. They particularly enjoyed picnicking at the lakes. Petronella wanted everyone to know she truly cherished her friendships and family.

She was the loving mother of Martin van den Oever and his wife Madeline of Fairfield, Eddy Lim and his wife Bonnie of Wayne; cherished grandmother of Kristy Lim of Wayne. She was predeceased by her first husband Martinus van den Oever (1954) and her second husband Edward Lim (1996), three sisters and a brother.

Friends may visit with the family from 2-4 PM on Sunday, December 10, 2017 at the Vander May Wayne Colonial Funeral Home, 567 Ratzer Road, Wayne. A 4 PM funeral service will follow the visitation hours.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations to Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital,  Memorial Processing, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959 would be appreciated.
