Amalia Schneider of Pompton Plains NJ, passed away peacefully on Thursday October 22, 2026 with the comfort of her family by her side. She was 102.
Amalia, always known as Mollie, was born in Brooklyn NY on July 9,1924 to Joseph and Mary (Marie) Ceraso. She attended Girls Commercial High School in Brooklyn and upon graduation worked for a local bank in her Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood. Inspired by the army enlistment of several male cousins, in 1944 at the age of 20 Mollie enlisted in the Women’s Army Corp (WAC) where she was a staff sergeant. She spent her first year in the army stationed in Georgia, she was then sent overseas to Germany where she was stationed in Nuremberg. At the end of the war she worked at the Nuremberg trials where she was the stenographer for the Chief of the Translation Division and was responsible for the safety of the trial transcripts and other official records. She played a role in an informational film that was sent to President Truman as he did not attend the trials.
After World War II she returned to New York City and there that she met James Campbell, a young man recently emigrated from Northern Ireland. They got married in 1953 and had two daughters, Joan and Diane. Mollie was widowed in 1968; in 1969 she married co-worker Ed Schneider who had a young son, John. The two families merged and lived in Wood-Ridge NJ for many years. Mollie enjoyed being a mother; she was fun-loving and gracious. Everyone said how much they enjoyed being around her. She worked as a tax clerk for the borough of Wood-Ridge for many years. She enjoyed playing canasta with many different groups of friends and was a 1st grade Sunday school teacher for 20 years.
Mollie became a grandmother four times over to Dan, Erin, Alexis and Nicky. In 2020, 2021 and 2025 she became even more fortunate when she became a great-grandmother to Strider, Aluna and Darien. She was so proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and never missed an opportunity to introduce them when they visited her at her residence at Cedar Crest Village where she lived for the last 12 years and where she enjoyed yet more groups of ladies playing cards and rummy-cube.
Mollie is predeceased by husband James Campbell, husband Edward Schneider and daughter Joan Ross. She is survived by her daughter Diane Bates (Peter); son John Scheider; son-in-law Anthony Ross (Joan); grandchildren Daniel Ross (Reena), Erin Prado (Richard), Alexis Bates and Nick Bates; and great-grandchildren Strider Ross, Aluna Prado and Darien Prado.
Memorial donations to St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital would be greatly appreciated.
