BettyAnn Van Riper (née DeBoer), age 88, of Wayne, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 18, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born in Paterson, NJ, BettyAnn was the eldest of four children born to George and Elizabeth DeBoer. During her childhood, her family relocated from Passaic to East Paterson (Elmwood Park), where she spent much of her youth. She attended Lodi High School where she graduated with the Class of 1956. While in school, she pursued business studies, developing skills in typing and the use of the Dictaphone.
Following graduation, BettyAnn worked as a secretary for Torsion Balance, a manufacturing company in Clifton, NJ. It was there that she met a young engineer, John C. Van Riper, Jr. He and BettyAnn fell in love, and on May 20, 1961, they were married at Madison Avenue Baptist Church in Paterson. Shortly thereafter, they settled in Wayne, NJ, where they made their home, remaining in the same residence for more than six decades.
BettyAnn made family a priority. She and John lovingly adopted their daughter, Leslie. Later, they welcomed their son, Richard, through adoption as well. BettyAnn then gave birth to James eight months later. The sacrifices she and John made for their children reflected their love.
BettyAnn devoted herself wholeheartedly to being a full-time homemaker. She and her husband John cherished fifty-four years of loving and loyal marriage until John’s passing in February of 2015.
BettyAnn was also devoted to her Christian faith. During her teen years, she assisted in Sunday school and in Pioneer Girls. She and her family were longtime members of Madison Avenue Baptist Church. BettyAnn believed deeply in the importance of faith and was committed to ensuring that her children knew the Lord and carried biblical values throughout their lives.
She was known by her family as the "Dutch Cleanser" because she was exceptionally organized and meticulous. She was also known for her delicious meatballs.
Though naturally private, reserved, and somewhat introverted, BettyAnn boldly stood for her convictions.
Her family finds comfort in knowing that she has been welcomed into the presence of her Lord and Savior and reunited with loved ones who have gone before her.
BettyAnn is survived by her three children: her daughter Leslie Hollandsworth and her husband James of Ellenboro, NC; her son Richard Van Riper and his wife Carolyn of Branchville, NJ, and her son James Van Riper and his wife Diana of Branchville, NJ; three siblings: her sister Audrey Stranburg of Pompton Lakes, NJ, her sister Lois DeBoer of Paterson, NJ, and her brother George DeBoer, Jr. of Clifton, NJ; eleven grandchildren: Kathryn Burtt, Joshua Hollandsworth, Philip Hollandsworth, Rachel Sueppel, Anna Whiting, Elizabeth McMahan, Sarah Snyder, Victoria Van Riper, James Van Riper II, Jonathan Van Riper, and Bethany Ramirez; and ten great grandchildren: Jackson, Denver, Brooklynne, Liam, Holland, Nathan, Jayden, Taylor, Eden, and Carter.
