Kathryn Linda Cirrincione, age 77, of Pompton Plains, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Thursday August 6, 2026.
The second-born child of Leo and Millie (Parisi) Grasso, Kathryn was born in New York City and raised there in the family’s home on First Avenue on the Lower East Side. She was a graduate of Washington Irving High School, an all-girls school in Gramercy Park.
When she was fifteen years old, Kathryn took her first part-time job at the New First Avenue Bakery stationed in the front of the store helping customers. At the same time, a handsome Sicilian immigrant named Carlo Cirrincione was working his first job in America at the back of the bakery as a bread baker. Carlo spoke only Sicilian and Italian, but needed to learn English in order to communicate in his new country. Kathryn spoke a little bit of Sicilian to communicate with her grandmother, who spoke no English. Their boss introduced them to each other as a way for Kathryn to improve her Italian for class, and for Carlo to learn English. That experience turned out to offer much more than a paycheck or free bread. As they spent time together, a friendship blossomed into a romantic relationship, ultimately leading to the marriage of Kathryn and Carlo on September 23, 1967 at St. Stanislaus R.C. Church in New York City.
In the spring of 1971, Kathryn and Carlo were blessed with a beautiful baby girl, whom they named Kathryn after her mother-in-law, Caterina. Kathryn doted on and cared for her baby girl in that unique way that only a mother can. In May of 1973, Kathryn was delighted to find out that she was pregnant again, this time with a double blessing of twins. Sadly, delight turned to great sorrow in the cold days of the winter of 1974 when Carla and Camille were born, only to live a short time in the hospital before God called them home. Then, as the winter of 1976 was giving way to spring, Kathryn and Carlo were once again blessed with another baby girl, whom they named Melissa.
While the Cirrincione’s first “home” was an apartment on Woodhaven Boulevard in the Jamaica section of Queens, New York, in 1979, Kathryn and Carlo left behind the city life they had known to follow the rest of her family to the other side of the Hudson River. They purchased a home in Pompton Plains, New Jersey, bringing along her parents, Millie and Leo. Kathryn devoted her life to providing Kathryn and Melissa with the best childhoods possible. Kathryn’s loving and generous spirit helped contribute to making their home a place where her family could always gather for good food, laughter, a few rounds of cards and coffee every Sunday and many holidays. New Jersey seemed like living in the countryside compared to the city. Suburban life was a welcomed change and they called it home to this day.
Kathryn worked at various places throughout her life, both prior to moving and after, including positions at: Woolworth’s Department Store in New York City, Hot Shoppes Cafeteria in Willowbrook Mall in Wayne, Bell Art in Pequannock, and Tri-Coastal Design Group in East Hanover, from which she retired in the early 2000s. As Kathryn got older, she developed a love for writing, aspiring to become an author, but her love for her big extended Italian family and her role as a mother and homemaker that mattered most to her.
In her spare time, Kathryn and her mother, Millie enjoyed making ceramics together. She proudly displayed their ceramic church and figurines, such as carolers and ice skaters, during the Christmas holiday season. She also loved listening to the music of Elvis Presley and Barbra Streisand. In the summertime, Kathryn, Carlo, and the girls often spent many days enjoying time at the local lake with the rest of the family, or travelling down to the Jersey Shore. One of Kathryn’s greatest delights was the birth and life of her precious granddaughter, Gianna, in January 2006.
Equal to her love for her family was Kathryn’s love for her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. It was Kathryn’s strong faith that sustained her through the loss of her daughters and her battle of cancer that God healed her of in the 1980s. Kathryn’s gift of intercession inspired countless family members and friends in need to request prayer for their different life situations. In more recent years, it was hard for Kathryn to make it to church, but thanks to the technology of livestreaming, she was able to tune in every Sunday to get a word from God through the ministry of Calvary Temple in Wayne, where she loved hearing from Pastor Matthew Battista and the entire ministry team of her church.
Some might remember Kathryn’s sassy and spitfire spirit, but everyone will remember the most important qualities she possessed: love of God, love of God’s Word, love of family, as well as care and compassion for family, friends, and even strangers.
Kathryn was the beloved wife of Carlo, blessed by God in holy matrimony for almost 59 years. She was the most loving mother of Kathryn Fincken and her husband, William, and Melissa Cahill and her husband, Gerald “Sammy”; cherished grandmother of Gianna Cahill; and dearest aunt of Nadine Scopoulis and her husband, Steve, and John Grasso, Jr. and his wife, Belle. Kathryn was predeceased in death by her two baby daughters, Carla and Camille Cirrincione, and her brother, John Grasso.
