Marie C. Wisher (née Otte), age 90, of Wayne, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 27, 2026, while surrounded by the love and comfort of her devoted family.
Born in Totowa, New Jersey, Marie was the beloved eldest of three children born to Martin and Jacoba Otte. At a young age, her family relocated to Paterson, where she was raised and spent her formative years. She attended Central High School before graduating from Eastside High School with the Class of 1952.
Following graduation, Marie began her career with a local finance company before accepting a position as a keypunch operator with Haband, where she worked faithfully for the next seven years.
As fate would have it, one seemingly ordinary day would forever change the course of her life. Marie met the love of her life, John Wisher, under unexpected circumstances. While accompanying her mother and John's brother on a visit to the hospital, where John was recovering from a broken finger, the two were introduced. What began as a chance encounter soon blossomed into a lifelong love story. Marie and John were united in marriage on March 18, 1961, the day after St. Patrick's Day. This would be a date they would fondly remember throughout their years together.
The young couple first made their home in Haskell before settling in Haledon, where they lovingly welcomed and raised their four children: Marie, John, Janet, and Robert. As their family continued to grow, they moved to Wayne, where they built a home filled with love, laughter, faith, and cherished memories.
After marrying, Marie embraced what she affectionately referred to as her most important profession; that of a full-time homemaker and "Domestic Engineer." She devoted herself wholeheartedly to caring for her husband, raising her children, and creating a warm, welcoming home where family always came first.
Following John's sudden passing in 1987, Marie displayed remarkable strength and resilience. Determined to provide for her family, she returned to the workforce as a bookkeeper for Central Shippie in Bloomingdale, where she remained a dedicated employee for twenty years until the company closed its doors.
Retirement offered Marie another opportunity to serve others. She generously volunteered her time as a caregiver for elderly residents at Christian Health Care Center in Wayne, bringing compassion, kindness, and companionship to those entrusted to her care. She continued her volunteer ministry until the COVID-19 pandemic.
Above all else, Marie's greatest joy in life was her family. She was a devoted mother, and in later years, she embraced the role of grandmother with immeasurable pride and affection. Her grandchildren were among life's greatest blessings, and every holiday, celebration, and family gathering was made special by her loving presence.
A woman of deep and abiding Christian faith, Marie was a longtime member of Preakness Bible Church, where she faithfully worshipped alongside her family and participated in the church's Women's Bible Study. Her quiet faith guided her life, and she lived as a humble example of kindness, grace, and unwavering devotion.
Marie found happiness in life's simple pleasures. She enjoyed challenging herself with word searches and jigsaw puzzles, tending to the vegetable garden she lovingly cared for in her backyard, and spending time with her beloved dogs, Pixie, her cherished Dachshund, and later Heidi, her faithful Havanese companion.
She was also an exceptional cook and baker whose recipes became treasured family traditions. No holiday was complete without Marie's famous pineapple upside-down cake, her beloved pistachio cake served each St. Patrick's Day, or her signature molded jelly dessert that appeared on the table year after year. Hosting holidays and gathering her family around the table brought her immense happiness, and those moments together became some of her family's most treasured memories.
Though naturally quiet and private, Marie possessed a gentle strength and unwavering love that spoke louder than words. Proud of her Dutch heritage, she carried herself with humility, resilience, and grace throughout her life. Her greatest legacy is the love she so generously gave to her family and the example of faith, perseverance, and selfless devotion she leaves behind.
Marie will be deeply missed by her loving children, cherished grandchildren, extended family, dear friends, and all whose lives were enriched by knowing her.
Marie is survived by; her daughter Marie De Martini and her husband Charles of Pine Bush, NY, her son John Wisher of Wayne, NJ, and her daughter Janet Semeniw and her husband Boris of Wantage, NJ, her brother Martin Otte and his wife Lorraine of Saddle Brook, NJ, seven grandchildren; Corina Semeniw-Power and her husband Brendan of Bostic, WA, Bethany Wisher and her partner Kenny Enman of Appleton, WI, Bryanna De Martini and her fiancé Jesus Ceron of Pine Bush, NY, Jacob De Martini of Rome, NY, Sara Wisher of Virginia Beach, VA, Mary Wisher of Virginia Beach, VA, and Sean Wisher of Virginia Beach, VA, and two great grandchildren; Bryce, and Lyla.
