Friends may visit with the family at the Vander May Wayne Colonial Funeral Home, 567 Ratzer Road, Wayne, on Sunday, Aug. 30, 2026 from 2-6 PM. Funeral Services will be held at 9:30 AM from the funeral home, then to Our Lady of the Valley RC Church, Wayne, where at 10:30 AM a Funeral Mass will be offered.
Robert Edward Swisher ("Bob") left this life peacefully on as a faithful husband, father and grandfather.
Bob was born and raised in Paterson, NJ on August 18, 1939 by his parents, Robert and Louise Swisher. Sadly, he lost both of his parents before reaching the age of 21. He grew up with his older sister Laura, living in the "Dublin" section of Paterson where everyone was everyone's friend. A great Italian neighborhood full of laughter, good times and the best homemade Italian food!
He attended Paterson Technical Highschool, now known as the Passaic County Technical
Institute, in Wayne, NJ. He graduated in 1957. Bob had many friends in school and long-lasting friends after school. He loved hanging out with his buddies who always called him "Swish". They always teased him because he never smoked, so they would blow smoke in his face! He was the quiet guy on the corner of Marshall and Slater Street, but had great fun with all those guys!
After graduation, Bob worked at Hoffmann La-Roche, a prestigious pharmaceutical company in Nutley, NJ, as a Chemical Operator for 45 years, earning many promotions through the years.
In 1962, Bob wanted to serve his Country, and chose to volunteer his draft to join the U.S. Army. He served in Korea for 14 months at the DMZ (demilitarized zone) between North and South Korea. His employer, Hoffmann La-Roche gave him a special leave to join the Armed Forces, guaranteeing that his job would be waiting for him when he returned in 1964.
When Bob returned from the Army, he happily returned to Hoffmann La-Roche and married his sweetheart, Sandy on May 23, 1964. They had a wonderful life together, and were blessed with raising 4 beautiful daughters (Sharon, Doreen, Donna and Jessica.) The girls were the center of their lives, taking them on fun vacations, day trips, visiting friends, and of course the good ole Jersey Shore. Bob always said It wasn't easy getting in the bathroom with four daughters. Later on in years, they traveled all over the continental United States and experienced Alaska by land and sea. Bob loved our beautiful country America, and wanted to explore Our Nation's grandeur. He especially loved Mount Rushmore in South Dakota and the Alaska trip! He was so proud to be an American. Wanting to explore other cultures, they traveled to Italy, Spain, London and Paris, Canada and British Columbia. Bob always looked forward to the next trip, as he found this beautiful world as amazing.
Bob's greatest passions were: His family, traveling/vacations, tending concerts, and of course the New York Giants! He was a die-hard Giants football fan and held a season ticket for nearly 60 years. He wouldn't miss a home game for anything. He enjoyed bowling in his younger years, playing golf, and spending time with friends. Bob was a quiet yet compassionate man, gentle demeanor, had a strong work ethic, a very dry sense of humor. He was a devout Catholic and never missed Sunday mass, only in emergencies.
Sandy will tell you that Bob was the most devoted husband and father, honest, patient, and a blessing to our family. He worked long hours, sometimes three different shifts, and always volunteered to switch for one of the guys if needed. His Roche buddies loved him!
Bob, your presence may be gone but your spirit will always be with us. Go in peace and be in the arms of our Dear Savior.
Bob is survived by his wife, Sandra (nee Haddad) his dear children: Sharon Rovere, (her belated husband Kevin Rovere, who sadly left this world in 2014) Doreen Calvello, and her husband, James Calvello, Donna Rojas, and her husband Mark Rojas, and Jessica Lenczewski, and her husband Chet Lenczewski; Nine grandchildren: Vanessa and James Calvello, Robert, Joseph and Nicholas Rovere, Alex and David Rojas, and Olivia and Angelica Lenczewski. Bob lost his only sister Laura Pulford in 2021 and his brother-ln-law, Lenny Pulford in 1984. He has one nephew, Kenny, and two nieces, Lisa and Karen and many great nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, a donation in Bob’s memory to either the Disabled Veterans of America, DAV.org, or Alzheimer’s New Jersey, would be greatly appreciated.
