Todd F. Mitchell, age 55, of Totowa passed suddenly and unexpectedly on Sunday, June 7, 2026.
He was born to Daniel and Elaine Mitchell in Ridgewood and raised in Wayne and Totowa where he has lived for the past forty-five years. Todd was a graduate of Passaic Valley High School, where he played football, with the Class of 1988.
Todd’s work ethic was evident from a young age. During his high school years, he began his career at the Blockbuster Video store in Totowa, where he learned the value of responsibility and customer service. He later dedicated twenty-five years to the Passaic County Sheriff’s Department, serving until his retirement in 2013. Throughout his law enforcement career, Todd worked at the Passaic County Courthouse, the Passaic County Jail, and on county patrol, earning the respect of colleagues and the community alike. Retirement did not slow him down. Todd continued serving others as a School Resource Officer for the Paterson Board of Education from 2014 to 2023 and in the same capacity for the Totowa Board of Education since 2023. He also worked as a security officer at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Passaic and has been employed by Parasys in Lincoln Park on weekends since 2023. Through every stage of his career, Todd demonstrated a strong commitment to public service, safety, and helping those around him.
Todd enjoyed life’s simple pleasures and the routines that brought him happiness. A familiar face at the gym, he took pride in staying active and maintaining his fitness. Friday evenings often found him unwinding with friends at Murph’s in Totowa or Frank’s in Lincoln Park, where good company and conversation were always on the menu. At home, Todd enjoyed relaxing in front of the television, faithfully watching reruns of The Rookie, NCIS, and Monk. His favorite movie was Rudy, a story whose themes of determination and perseverance reflected his own outlook on life. A dedicated martial artist, Todd earned the rank of Second-Degree Black Belt through years of discipline and hard work. He was also a proud member of American Legion Post 227 and the Passaic Valley Elks Lodge 2111, both in Totowa. Todd was known for his meticulous nature, especially when it came to cleanliness. He kept a spotless home, enjoyed grilling for family and friends, and firmly believed that dishes belonged washed and put away—not sitting in the sink. With his sharp sense of humor, he was also known to have little patience for dopey people. Beneath his tough exterior, however, Todd had a deep love for animals. Over the years, he shared his life with several beloved companions, including Sarge, his K-9 partner at work who famously failed out of the police dog program for being too friendly, as well as Axle, Cosmo, and his cat, Zuri. The joy and companionship these animals brought him were evident to all who knew him. Todd’s wit, discipline, loyalty, and unwavering standards will be remembered fondly by all who knew and loved him.
Todd was the much loved Fiancé of Jessica Woodside; devoted father of Alexa Mitchell of Totowa, Jenna Mitchell of Totowa, the late Brielle Mitchell (d. 2020), Everly of Totowa and his step-daughter Tatiana Woodside also of Totowa; he was the loved brother of Daniel Mitchell and his wife Sherry Harper-Mitchell of France, Robert Dalzell and his late wife Joann (d. 2014), Steven Dalzell and his wife Nancy of Bluffton, SC, Sean Mitchel and his wife Gina of Wayne, and Curtis “CJ” Pandorf and his wife Laura of Cedar Park, TX who had a deep bond with Todd and was cared for like a brother.
